The Center for Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) of the Veneto Region is operative in the North-East of Italy. RP Center works inside the Operative Unit of Ophthalmology of the Civil Hospital of Camposampiero, which belongs to the healthcare provider Azienda ULSS 6 Euganea of Padova. Since 2004 RP Center has been activated as clinical and rehabilitative service for patients affected by retinal rare diseases by the Resolution no. 4095/2003 of the Veneto Region, according to the Italian National Law 284/1997 “Regulations for the prevention of blindness and visual rehabilitation”. Since 2008 the RP Center has been also assisted by specialized university personnel thanks to a specific contract for the Institutional Research on Retinal Rare Diseases of the Department of Biomedical and Specialty Surgical Sciences of the University of Ferrara.
The main mission of the RP Center is to provide for a Patient-Centered care specifically dedicated to the mid- or long-term take-in-charge of patients with inherited retinal dystrophies, as well as of their family members. In the last years, the patients with inherited retinal dystrophies firstly diagnosed or periodically monitored at RP Center continuously increased, arriving at the number of 608 cases in 2016, when the extra-regional patients have reached the 15% of the full cohort. Certification activities of RP Center are performed within the Inter-Regional Register for Rare Disease of the Veneto Region, an intranet HTTPS platform shared by nine Italian Regions and managed by the University of Padova.
