Mater Dei Hospital is an acute general teaching hospital offering a full range of hospital services, including an extensive range of specialist services. It is the largest healthcare institution on the Maltese Islands.
Mater Dei aims to create a centre of excellence in the provision of effective and efficient, acute patient centred quality care. It also aims to achieve high levels of patient and staff satisfaction and enhance teaching, research and innovation.
The Department of Ophthalmology at Mater Dei Hospital provides a comprehensive eye care service to the population of Malta. The outpatients department hosts a busy schedule of consultant-led ophthalmology clinics and is supported by in-house orthoptic and optometry services. It is furnished with a variety of modern diagnostic, imaging, and laser equipment. A dedicated ophthalmic ward offers inpatient eye care and manages elective and emergency admissions for surgery. A large number of daycase and inpatient surgical interventions are carried out in the dedicated ophthalmic operating theatres. A full range of specialist procedures are offered including cataract, corneal, glaucoma, vitreoretinal and strabismus surgery.
