ERN-EYE and EPNS are organising a joint webinar on Papilledema versus pseudopapilledema in children: definitions, diagnostic algorithms and pitfalls.
Headache in children is a common presentation, and fundus examination remains a key part of the evaluation to rule out papilledema – a hallmark of raised intracranial pressure. However, optic disc elevation is not always what it seems. Even experienced clinicians can struggle to distinguish true papilledema from its frequent mimicker: pseudopapilledema. This talk will provide a practical, clinically oriented approach to differentiating the two, with a focus on non-invasive, multimodal imaging techniques, especially using optical coherence tomography. We’ll explore why pseudopapilledema is particularly prevalent in paediatric populations and how structured assessment can reduce diagnostic uncertainty – minimizing unnecessary investigations while ensuring timely diagnosis when intervention is needed.
