Biographies

Professor Marko Hawlina is head of neuroophthalmology and retinal dystrophy service at Eye Hospital, University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia. He received his residency training in Ljubljana and completed his PhD studies on retinal electrophysiology with prof. Hisako Ikeda at St.Thomas’ Hospital in London. His research includes a variety of genetic eye diseases including Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy. He has authored or co-authored over 120 papers cited on Pubmed and mentored 12 PhD students.

Assist prof. Martina Jarc-Vidmar, MD, PhD, FEBO
Martina Jarc-Vidmar is neuroophthalmology and medical retina consultant at the University Eye Hospital in Ljubljana, Slovenia, active member of EUNOS, EURETINA and ERN EYE. Besides ophthalmology trainings in Slovenia, she obtained further education at Basic Science Ophthalmology Course at Stanford University (USA) and by doing observerships at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. In 2005 she was ranked first overall at EBO exam in Paris, France. She has authored/co-authored many peer reviewed scientific articles, mainly in the field of neuro-ophthalmology (LHON) and retinal dystrophies and was an invited speaker at LHON experts meetings in Budapest, Prague, Ljubljana, Belgrade and Vodice.

I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ljubljana in 2013 and subsequently underwent a specialty training in ophthalmology at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, which I completed in 2020. During residency, I received further clinical training in neuro – ophthalmology and strabismus at the University Hospital Vienna and the Bologna University Hospital. I currently work at the University Eye Hospital in Ljubljana, with primary clinical and research interest in neuro-ophthalmology.

Sanja Petrović Pajić
Dr Sanja Petrovic Pajic is an ophthalmologist and teaching assistant at the Clinical Centre and Medical Faculty, University of Belgrade, Serbia where she received her medical and residency training. After that she finished her fellowship in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery at the Eye Clinic, University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia. She completed her PhD studies with prof. Marko Hawlina and continues her research in identification of potential clinical biomarkers of Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy.
