The reason for the merger was the foundation of a medical faculty at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. With over 1,800 beds, the Kepler University Hospital is Austria's second largest hospital and the central health care provider in Upper Austria. The University Clinic for Ophthalmology and Optometry is under the direction of Prof. Dr. Matthias Bolz.
