Biographies

Pr Thomas Reinhard

Professor Reinhard was appointed chair and head of the Eye Center Freiburg in 2003. Since then he implemented innovative concepts in diagnostics, treatment and science with his co-wokers. He led the Eye Center Freiburg into the top group of German eye hospitals.

Milestones were the implementation of a quality check system, development of the LIONS Cornea Bank Baden-Württemberg, development of the Augennetz Südbaden, implementation of an emergency unit for 6 counties/cities, development of the eye
bus concept and the development of a prevention unit.

In the Eye Center Freiburg, habilitations have been achieved in 28 coworkers since 2003. 63 colleagues have finished residency since 2003. Professor Reinhard has held many executive functions in national and international boards. He has held different functions in the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG), the oldest ophthalmological society in the world, e.g. as president and secretary general, and realized a number of significant changes and improvements.

Pr Daniel Böhringer

Prof. Dr. med. Daniel Böhringer serves as Senior Physician and Head of Clinical Studies at the Eye Center of the University Hospital of Freiburg. He earned his medical license and PhD in cardiovascular physiology in 1999, subsequently completing his ophthalmology training in Düsseldorf and Freiburg.

In 2011, he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology, underscoring his academic contributions. His expertise spans clinical trials, particularly concerning the anterior eye segment, regulatory affairs, and the application of machine learning. With an H-Index of 48 (Google Scholar, 2025) and notable awards like the Troutman Prize, Prof. Böhringer is a recognized expert in ophthalmic research.

Pr Reda Žemaitienė

Prof. Reda Žemaitienė is Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) and Hospital of LUHS Kauno Klinikos; Head of the Cornea and uveitis sector. Professor is a co-author of 7 textbooks, 3 of which have been compiled by her and a co-author of more than 160 scientific articles. 43 articles are indexed referenced in the Web of Science database.

The main field of interest: cataract, glaucoma, cornea, uveitis, including pediatric patients and rare eye diseases.

Prof. Reda Žemaitienė is a member of Anterior Segment Rare Eye Disease group and the representative of the Hospital of LUHS in European Reference Network on Rare Eye Diseases (ERN-EYE).

Since 2020, prof. Reda Žemaitienė has been a representative of Lithuania in European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) and since 2023, she has been a national representative in European Ophthalmological Society (SOE) board. She is Vice-President of Lithuanian Ophthalmological Society and a member of Lithuanian Glaucoma Society, EuCornea, World Cornea Society, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and Tear Research group.

Dr Mikk Pauklin

Dr Pauklin graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tartu in 2004. From 2005 to 2011, he was a joint doctoral student at the University of Tartu Medical School and the University of Duisburg-Essen Medical School in Germany and defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Duisburg-Essen (summa cum laude).

Dr Pauklin has been working at the University of Tartu Hospital since 2009 in various positions – as a physician-in-residence in ophthalmology from 2009 to 2012, as a lecturer in ophthalmology from 2012 to 2021, and as a senior lecturer in ophthalmology from June 2021.

At the same time, he has also worked as an assistant at the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University of Tartu and is still working as a lecturer in Ophthalmology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine.

Dr Pauklin has been a member of the Board of the Estonian Ophthalmological Society since 2009 and President of the Society since 2018, a member of the Estonian Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons since 2012 and a member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery since 2009.
