A história do Rigshospitalet remonta ao primeiro hospital real da Dinamarca, o "The Royal Frederiks Hospital", que foi criado para cuidar e tratar os pobres de Copenhague por apego. O hospital foi inaugurado em 1757 e estava localizado em Bredgade, onde hoje se encontra o Kunstindustrimuseet. Em 1910, o hospital passou a fazer parte do estado e mudou-se para sua localização atual na Blegdamsvej. O hospital também mudou seu nome para Rigshospitalet, pois deverá estar disponível para todos os cidadãos do Reino no futuro. O moderno Rigshospital, com seus altos edifícios cinzentos, data da década de 1960 e hoje faz parte da Região da Capital.
