Interview of the month - Dr Katarzyna Nowomiejska, Medical University of Lublin, Poland

Every month, ERN-EYE invites you to meet an active person within the network through a short interview. This month, it's Katarzyna Nowomiejska, HCP Medical University of Lublin, Poland, who agreed to answer our questions.

What is your concrete role in the ERN-EYE network?

I am a representative of the Department of General Ophthalmology of Medical University of Lublin, the only HCP in Poland taking part in the European Reference Network for Rare Eye Diseases. Moreover, to expand my knowledge in diagnostic procedures for rare eye diseases, I am visiting regularly University Eye Hospital in Tübingen under supervision of Prof. Eberhart Zrennner.

In your opinion, what is the most important issue ERN-EYE could overcome?

In my opinion the most crucial issue is expanding possibilities for genetic testing in all countries. Defining specific gene mutation is mandatory for possible future treatment methods. Unfortunately, not all patients with rare eye diseases in Poland have access to genetic testing and genetic counseling.

What are the main challenges of the network?

I think that establishing virtual clinics and data processing are the main challenges, as there are so many variables to exchange within the network.

And the best advances?

For me the best advance is the opportunity to meet European leaders in ophthalmology during ERN-EYE meetings.

In your dreams, what would ERN-EYE look like in 10 years ?

I expect that ERN-EYE will give a hope for thousands of blind patients with rare eye diseases for new rehabilitation and treatment methods.
