AMC/LUMC działają jako centra wiedzy poświęcone tematom z zakresu zdrowia publicznego, które mają wpływ na społeczeństwo. Pełnią funkcję kierowniczą w regionie oraz działają jako ośrodki kształcenia ustawicznego i dokształcania dla pracowników służby zdrowia.
AMC / LUMC to ośrodki eksperckie zajmujące się rzadkimi chorobami oczu, z aktywnymi badaniami klinicznymi i podstawowymi na ten temat. Baza danych oftalmogenetycznych AMC jest jedną z największych na świecie.
