De historische achtergrond van Rigshospitalet gaat terug tot het eerste echte ziekenhuis van Denemarken, "The Royal Frederiks Hospital", dat werd opgericht om arme Kopenhagenaren door gehechtheid te verzorgen en te behandelen. Het ziekenhuis werd geopend in 1757 en bevond zich in Bredgade, waar tegenwoordig het Kunstindustrimuseet te vinden is. In 1910 werd het ziekenhuis onderdeel van de staat en verhuisde het naar de huidige locatie aan Blegdamsvej. Het ziekenhuis veranderde ook zijn naam in Rigshospitalet, omdat het in de toekomst beschikbaar zou moeten zijn voor alle burgers van het Koninkrijk. Het moderne Rigshospital, met zijn hoge grijze gebouwen, dateert uit de jaren zestig en maakt tegenwoordig deel uit van het Hoofdstedelijk Gewest.
