Onderzoek is een belangrijke voorwaarde voor vooruitgang in diagnostiek en therapie. De nadruk in het onderzoek van UKE ligt op de neurowetenschappen, hart- en vaatonderzoek, zorgonderzoek, oncologie, maar ook op infecties en ontstekingen. Andere potentiële gebieden van de UKE zijn moleculaire beeldvorming en skeletbiologisch onderzoek.
