L'histoire du Rigshospitalet remonte au premier véritable hôpital du Danemark, « l'hôpital Royal Frederiks », qui a été créé pour soigner et traiter les pauvres Copenhague par attachement. L'hôpital a ouvert ses portes en 1757 et était situé à Bredgade, où se trouve aujourd'hui le Kunstindustrimuseet. En 1910, l'hôpital est devenu partie intégrante de l'État et a déménagé à son emplacement actuel, à Blegdamsvej. L'hôpital a également changé son nom pour Rigshospitalet, car il devrait à l'avenir être accessible à tous les citoyens du Royaume. Le Rigshospital moderne, avec ses grands bâtiments gris, date des années 1960 et fait aujourd'hui partie de la région de la capitale.
