The Department of Ophthalmology of Bellvitge University Hospital takes care of specialized diagnosis and treatment for complex ophthalmology diseases. This is a public Institution that provides direct outpatient and inpatient services to a referral area of 2.242.730 habitants for complex procedures and to all country of Spain for rare ophthalmic diseases due to its designation as a CSUR center (Referral centers and units endorsed by resolution of the Ministry of Health of Spain- Based on the Real Decreto 1302/2006 del 26/12/2008).

The ophthalmology department delivers university, post-graduate, or specialized level of education and training in ophthalmology and in the Network’s area of expertise. Our department is accredited for training residents in the National Health System and Medical students as a university hospital linked to the University of Barcelona.

The Ophthalmology department in the setting of a big Hospital offers a multidisciplinary approach for many diseases with other departments such as Internal Medicine, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiology, Pathology, Maxillofacial, Rheumatology and Genetic Services amongst others.

The Hospital, together with its research center, IDIBELL (Biomedical Research Institute of Bellvitge), is part of the Bellvitge Campus, which is also home to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona and the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO). In this environment, formed by the Hospital, the IDIBELL and the University of Barcelona, we are involved in several clinical and translational research projects that makes us a reference center in Catalonia and Spain in clinical research and teaching.
