Los antecedentes históricos de Rigshospitalet se remontan al primer hospital real de Dinamarca, el "The Royal Frederiks Hospital", que se estableció para cuidar y tratar a los habitantes pobres de Copenhague por apego. El hospital abrió sus puertas en 1757 y estaba ubicado en Bredgade, donde hoy se encuentra el Kunstindustrimuseet. En 1910, el hospital pasó a formar parte del estado y se trasladó a su ubicación actual en Blegdamsvej. El hospital también cambió su nombre a Rigshospitalet, ya que en el futuro debería estar disponible para todos los ciudadanos del Reino. El moderno Rigshospital, con sus altos edificios grises, data de los años 1960 y hoy forma parte de la Región Capital.
