Der historische Hintergrund des Rigshospitalet geht zurück auf Dänemarks erstes richtiges Krankenhaus, das „Königliche Frederiks-Krankenhaus“, das zur Pflege und Behandlung armer Kopenhagener aus Eigenheimen gegründet wurde. Das Krankenhaus wurde 1757 eröffnet und befand sich in Bredgade, wo sich heute das Kunstindustrimuseet befindet. Im Jahr 1910 wurde das Krankenhaus Teil des Staates und zog an seinen heutigen Standort am Blegdamsvej. Das Krankenhaus änderte auch seinen Namen in Rigshospitalet, da es künftig allen Bürgern des Königreichs zur Verfügung stehen sollte. Das moderne Rigshospital mit seinen hohen grauen Gebäuden stammt aus den 1960er Jahren und ist heute Teil der Hauptstadtregion.
